Almost every Tel Aviv beach has free public beach volleyball courts. According to the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality’s beach services table, courts are available at Tel Baruch, Northern Tzuk, Metzitzim, Hilton, Gordon, Frishman, Bograshov, Jerusalem, Aviv and Givat Aliya beaches. The one beach without courts is the separate Nordau Beach. Gordon Beach, in the middle of the hotel strip, is the best known for volleyball and has the busiest games.
Here is where to play, how pickup games work, and the rules for matkot, Israel’s favorite beach paddle game. For every beach in the city, see our Tel Aviv beaches guide.

How pickup volleyball works
- Courts are public and free. There is no booking system for casual play; the courts are first come, first served.
- Bring your own ball. Do not count on finding one at the court.
- Ask to join. On busy courts, players usually rotate teams in, so ask who has next game.
- Play early or late. Midday sand gets very hot in summer, and the evening light is the best of the day.
Matkot: the Tel Aviv beach paddle game
Matkot is two wooden paddles and a small rubber ball, and its sound is the soundtrack of every Tel Aviv beach. The rule to know: the municipality does not allow matkot, frisbee or other ball games inside the declared swimming area. Play on the sand, away from the water line and away from people lying down. Our Trumpeldor Beach guide covers one of the beaches best known for matkot, and our Tel Aviv beach rules page has the full list of rules.
Other beach sports in Tel Aviv
- Surfing: Hilton Beach is the main surf beach, and winter brings the biggest swells. See our winter beach guide.
- Water sports zones: the city allows surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing only in set zones, including at Tel Baruch, Hilton, Gordon, Charles Clore and Givat Aliya beaches.
- Outdoor gyms: free exercise stations are found along parts of the Tayelet promenade.
Where to stay near the courts
If volleyball is the plan, stay near Gordon or Frishman. See our lists of hotels near Gordon Beach and hotels near Frishman Beach.
