The Tel Aviv beaches are free and open to everyone, but the city enforces a short list of rules. The big ones: swim only when a lifeguard is on duty, never under a black flag, no glass, no fires or barbecues, no disposable tableware, no tents or sleeping on the beach, and no dogs except in four designated areas. Ball games and matkot are not allowed inside the swimming area. This page lists every rule from the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality in one place, with links to our detailed guides.

Swimming and lifeguards
Lifeguards work only during the bathing season. In 2026 it ran from 25 March to 10 October, from 07:15 until between 16:45 and 18:45 depending on the month. Outside those hours, and outside the season, swimming is not allowed. Always swim in front of a staffed lifeguard station. Our Tel Aviv beach safety page and our winter beach guide explain more.
Alcohol on the beach
The municipality’s list of beach rules does not ban alcohol, but it does ban glass. In practice that means cans or plastic only, and drinking responsibly near the water. Our full answer is on can you drink alcohol on the beach in Tel Aviv.
Dogs on the beach
Dogs are banned from the beaches except in four areas set aside for them, where dogs that are not classed as dangerous may be let off the leash, following the signs. The four areas are south of Tel Baruch Beach, north of Hilton Beach, south of Charles Clore Beach and south of Givat Aliya Beach. Our guide to dog-friendly beaches in Tel Aviv has photos and tips.

Matkot and ball games
Matkot, the Israeli beach paddle game, is part of every Tel Aviv summer, but the city does not allow it, or frisbee and other ball games, inside the declared bathing area. Play on the sand away from swimmers. Our beach volleyball guide lists the beaches with courts.
Drones
On 18 October 2023, Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority banned recreational drone flights nationwide for security reasons, as reported by the Jerusalem Post. The rules have changed several times since then. Before you fly anywhere near the beach, check the current rules with the Civil Aviation Authority; its study material for recreational drone pilots is on gov.il (Hebrew PDF).
Protecting your things
Theft from unattended bags is the most common problem on busy beaches. Use a locker; see our guide to lockers and storage on the Tel Aviv beach and our theft prevention tips.
