Dogs are allowed on the sand at four designated spots in Tel Aviv: north of Hilton Beach, south of Tel Baruch Beach, south of Charles Clore Beach and south of Givat Aliya (Ajami) Beach. The stretch by Hilton is the busiest and the one locals mean by “the dog beach”. On every other declared beach, dogs are not allowed on the sand.
At a glance
- Where dogs are allowed on the sand: four designated areas only
- The four: north of Hilton Beach, south of Tel Baruch Beach, south of Charles Clore Beach and south of Givat Aliya (Ajami) Beach
- Everywhere else: dogs are not allowed on the sand of the declared bathing beaches
- Lifeguards: the dog areas are not bathing beaches and have no lifeguard
- Bring: water, a bowl, shade and bags
The Hilton dog beach
The main dog beach is the stretch just north of Hilton Beach, below Independence Park (Gan HaAtzmaut), a short walk north of the marina. Dogs run free on the sand and in the water, and on a Saturday morning it is one of the best free shows in Tel Aviv. Early morning and sunset are the social hours; in summer, midday is for heat-proof dogs only.
Tel Aviv has a fair claim to being one of the world’s most dog-friendly cities, with a very high number of dogs per resident and dozens of dog parks.
All four designated dog areas
- North of Hilton Beach
- Why go: the real dog beach, busy and social, with regulars like Radio, a Golden Retriever who will fetch your frisbee if you let him.
- Facilities: the dog strip is bare sand, with a dog shower. The kiosk, toilets and people showers are on Hilton Beach next door, where dogs are not allowed on the sand.
- Tip: bring a ball, and come early on weekends.
- South of Tel Baruch Beach
- Why go: the quiet north end of the coast, with plenty of space and far fewer people.
- Facilities: a big car park behind the beach, and lawns nearby.
- South of Charles Clore Beach
- Why go: the dog area sits between the park lawns and Jaffa, so dogs get grass as well as sand.
- Facilities: the seafront park behind it has paths, benches and shade.
- South of Givat Aliya (Ajami) Beach
- Why go: the quietest of the four, in southern Jaffa, far from the hotel strip.

Beaches where dogs are not allowed
- Gordon Beach
- One of the busiest tourist beaches in Tel Aviv, with dogs banned from the sand.
- The Hilton dog beach is a short walk north.
- Jerusalem Beach (Geula Beach)
- Popular with families and volleyball players. No dogs on the sand.
- Banana Beach
- A laid-back sunset crowd, set up for people. No dogs on the sand; the Charles Clore dog area is just south.
The same applies to Metzitzim, Nordau, Frishman, Bograshov and the other declared swimming beaches, and municipal inspectors do hand out fines. For leash rules on the promenade and everything else, see the Tel Aviv beach rules.
Rules and paperwork
- Off-leash is the norm in the designated dog areas.
- Owners must clean up after their dogs; bins sit at the park entrances above the beach.
- Dogs must be licensed and chipped, as everywhere in Tel Aviv. The municipality’s animal services page covers licensing, vaccination and the city vet.
- There is no lifeguard in the dog areas, for people or dogs.
Getting there
For the Hilton dog beach, walk north along the Tayelet past the marina and Hilton Beach; the dog beach is the next stretch, below the park. Parking: see our beach parking guide.
What to bring
- Water and a bowl; there is little shade on the dog strips.
- Bags, and a towel for the car.
- Dog-safe sunscreen for short-haired or light-coloured dogs in summer.
